Knox Box Program

The New Jersey Fire Code requires that fire departments have access to all areas of commercial properties. To comply, the Lakewood Fire Department utilizes Knox® key boxes and padlocks, which provide high security for businesses while ensuring rapid access for emergency responders.

A Knox Box® is required for all commercial properties with fire protection systems (e.g., alarms, sprinklers, elevators, or hood systems), as well as for manual or automatic gates.

Steps for Purchasing and Installing Required Equipment

  1. Visit the Knox Company Website
    Go to www.knoxbox.com.
  2. Change Location Settings
    • In the top right corner, click “Change.”
    • Under “Your Location,” select New Jersey.
    • For “Local Fire Department/Agency,” choose Ocean Co Fire Marshal / Lakewood to view the approved products for your area.
  3. Browse Available Products
    Under the “Products” tab, select either “Commercial Knox Boxes” or “Gate Key Switches & Padlocks,” depending on your needs.
  4. Select Your Equipment
    Choose the appropriate model for your Knox Box, key access, or padlock.
  5. Place Your Order
    Enter the installation address where the product will be installed (not the shipping address) and complete your purchase on the Knox website.
  6. Receive Your Equipment
    Wait for your order to arrive and be installed before scheduling setup.
  7. Schedule Programming of E-Core & Secure Keys
    Complete the online Knox Key Secure Form below, and a member of the Fire Department will contact you to schedule programming and key placement.
